Head above water

It's funny how there are so many manic personalities that have to be dealt with in the performing arts.

One colleague selected the band for the final number of our major concert next week......he chose who he thought were good people.....none in the final year at the college. The final year kids have made a few complaints - to the prinicipal and the senior school coordinator. No one is backing down....precious personalities on both sides!!!!

I am in the middle trying to keep my head above water.

Another colleague has taken over the junior strings.....she has invigorated the group. They want to do anything for her! I am suitably jealous of the ideas that she has. A few others (who are over the tender age of 60) have poo-pooed her ideas. They think that she is making some silly decisions. They are cute - but they are going to be fabulous. She came to me after the formal part of the day with a problem with the reactions she was getting.....I have backed her completely. It will be hard work to convince the others to shut up!

There are minor things that I am being told about - which have some bigger impact later on. The ad that I had designed, did not print well. The ladies changed it but didn't inform me until after they had printed 500 copies!

I ran a brilliant massed (massacred) singing rehearsal last week. The kids were awesome. The staff really helpful. Today a whole new story. We had had general assembly so all the kids were silly from the strange timetable. The rehearsal was after lunch. Walked into the hall and the smell of the varnish being painted on the new wall surfaces. All of this was out of my control. The teachers......well...... Many of them were doing the right thing BUT there were a few who stood at the back and did sweet F A! IN fact two of them decided to go and have a sit down.....AT.THE.OTHER.END.OF.THE.HALL! It was devastating to me after last week! (think - one person trying to get 700+ kids singing without all staff supporting me).

I am still sick. I have many things that are needing to be done before the concert next week. I have some very precious staff members! I know that it will be fine.
