I stated that I am angry - this has caused an interesting reaction. People I know have asked me why. Yesterday morning I couldn't answer this. Now I can - or can to some degree.....
My neighbours - sheesh! As I stated yesterday they had a bit of a party up until 12.30 on Friday night, Saturday until midnight which is all just a little weird. Well I spoke too soon....they started up again at 9am yesterday morning. Radio blaring, laughing and joking loudly on the fence line AND then they lit the dreaded wood burner thing they have. My house now stinks of wood smoke. I went out yesterday for the whole day so I am not sure how long they were yahooing for.
I'm frustrated that I am not where I thought I would be - ie home ownership. I am still renting so the neighbours really frustrate me as I would LOVE to move but still saving really hard until I can purchase something.....it feels like it is such a long way away......months until I purchase.
Now I am tired (I didn't get home until 2am but it was great sitting having a good natter with friends) and on edge as I don't know when the neighbours will fire up again. I have that gag thing going (sorry if you're eating at the moment) that means that I am unable to swallow cleanly etc. Very frustrating when you want to have something to eat...
Before getting excessively tired I noticed that I am sickening - sore throat, headachy etc. Now I normally do get a bit grumpy when I am getting sick but it was only a small part of it. So this just added to my anger.
There are a few hormonal reasons for my anger but I wouldn't give it too much weight.
Then finally I have lucked out again in the world of dating. Interested guy, dinner, plans to catch up again, stood up. That's as simple as I can put it.
I wouldn't say that I am focusing on this but everyone else around me have used this as the reason to explain my anger. It's been fascinating. I have learnt this last weekend that if you say that you are angry, people need a reason pretty quickly. I know I do if someone around me says that they are angry. There is something a little disconcerting about having someone near you who seems edgy with no apparent reason.
The honest truth is that I am hurt by the situation that occurred with this bloke but I am not angry at him. I am frustrated at my reaction to the situation but again I am not that angry over it.
Today I am not so angry. I am more frustrated and edgy. The anger has subsided - but I will be using the emotion of it to complain to my estate agent about the neighbours AGAIN!
I would like to calm down a bit more as I am very wary of saying something to someone with the aggression that could cause a knockout blow to a friendship.
I will see how the day pans out.
Since I began, this blog has been about me....complete ramblings but always my raw thoughts......

not much to say
I'm just checking in. I really don't have a lot to say at the moment.
Actually I have lots to say but at the moment it is rough, raw and quite vitriolic. I am angry - haven't yet worked out why. Might let you know when I have got to the bottom of it all.
One thing I will give you an update on is the neighbours. Both Friday night and Saturday night they had a party. They have been fairly quiet (for them they were!) in recent weeks.
Now being as angry as I am their party is aggravating to say the least. BUT both nights they have STOPPED their party just as I was trying to go to sleep. Friday night 12.30am. Saturday night midnight on the dot. This is just freaky! One moment they're singing along badly to really crappy music (I think that is called drunken festivities) and the next minute they have stopped.

The progress of my sock
Holidays.
There are so many things that I could do - being a tourist in my own city, lots of catch up morning/afternoon teas/lunches etc. BUT the knitting bug has hijacked me. Having gone wool shopping with Frogdancer I have just sat and knitted.
Here is what I am working on.... I think it looks pretty good. I also think I need to get out more!

Have you ever knitted socks?
So I am feeling a lot better now. My vibration headache is pretty much gone but my jaw line still hurts a little.
Today I put the car in for a service - been a while since it was looked after. Without even trying I am spending a lot of money at the moment but hey I'm looking after myself......
While my car was in being attended to (nothing serious) I went yarn shopping with Frogdancer. I have bought some sock yarn - very colourful, and some scarf wool. I thought about buying enough wool for a jumper but had an hysteria attack over the cost of the wool. Yes it is luxury yarn (wool mixed with alpaca and silk) but at $18 per 100g and you need just over 1kg for a jumper - well.....
I have started one pair of socks - they will rival the pair I made last year. I will photograph them when I have finished.....

I'm feeling sorry for myself.
What was I thinking? The day after the Easter long weekend I scheduled a dental appointment for two fillings. One was just a surface thing to stop erosion (I'm feeling it is best to think in terms of conservation...) but the other was a big thing.
It looked like a small drill and fill but we found out today that it was just a little more than that. A miners helmet might have been brought in for the dentist, I'm not sure as I had my eyes firmly shut.
Straight after getting my filling and paying ($$$$!) I went to the library and borrowed a few more books so I could while away the afternoon. I then zipped over to the supermarket to get some eggs as with the numbness I have a feeling that hard food is not an option for my next meal. (I assure you that they were not chocolate eggs - that is how I got into this mess in the first place.)
Now I'm lying on the couch with the cat on my knee and I'm feeling a little sorry for myself. I have a vibration headache from the drilling - taken some paracetamol, and I've rediscovered the joys of trying to drink without the use of half your mouth.
I think I might have a sleep to get over it.....or maybe watch Dr. Phil. and Oprah - that will numb the brain.

Popcorn for anyone?
So I have had my own movie marathon these last few days. It all happened by accident.
Driving home from work on Thursday night I was feeling a bit flat. The young 'uns went off to have dinner together after we had after work drinks. I felt somewhat peeved that I hadn't been invited BUT I know that my answer would've been 'no' so I decided that I just had to get over it.
I realised that I had stupidly said that I wouldn't be able to make dinner with a very close friend and a friend of hers from work. I looked at the time and knew that I could make it before they went off to dance class. (I had been to that class before but wasn't up for a dance on Thursday night).
After a good time of catch up it was time for the lovely ladies to head off to their class and I started to head home. I realised that I haven't been home on a Thursday night in ages and had no idea what was on TV. So I detoured to the movie shop and browsed the shelves.
What a selection - there are so many movies that I haven't seen, mainly as I don't want to see them. A few of them caught my attention because I had heard mixed reviews from kids and friends. My take home bounty was The Nanny Diaries, Stomp the Yard and Pirates of the Caribbean 3:At world's end. My viewing order was set by the return dates on them.
Nanny diaries first. Pretty much a modern take on Mary Poppins without the singing, dancing and credible story line. There was so much sugary, sweet goop on the screen. Almost credible acting but I fast forwarded through a lot of this. Also I got up and roamed the house a few times.
As the neighbours were out on the patio watching the footy I decided to watch another film. Stomp the Yard. Ha ha ha ha ha!
I'm sorry to admit that I watched it twice - but both times I fast forwarded through the predictable story line (bad boy overcomes all after being given a second chance, rises to the top of a conservative group of people and wins the girl although his nemesis is giving him a run for his money - sounds like a good opera to me!) I stopped the fast forward at the dance/step routines. They were pretty good but were annoyingly edited with special effects (camera angles, speed etc).
Good Friday I caught up with a good friend for lunch and she suggested that we go to see Juno which I had wanted to see for a long time but hadn't managed. GREAT film in my humble opinion. Story of teenage pregnancy and the raw emotions that go with it. Loved it!
Then I had my usual meeting with a group of people who gather to eat and see a movie. I thought that I wouldn't mind seeing Run Fatboy Run. Although funny, it wasn't what I thought it would be.
Today I watched the third of my DVDs Pirates of the Caribbean 3. A very dark film. Good. Much better than the 2nd but not as good as the 1st. Twists and turns a plenty in this.
I am over the movies at the moment. 5 in 48 hours is a lot to deal with. Time for friends, talking and some reading to allow my imagination the chance to play.
HAPPY EASTER TO ALL.

last day of term
Well I have made it to the end of term 1. It is a very exciting thing. Tomorrow is a sleep in. In fact all the days for the next 17 are sleep ins!
Highlight for today..... I had a 2nd half of recess yard duty! I was meant to be there for 15 minutes, it ended up being 35 minutes! Hmm! When the posse of students appeared after I had been there for 20 minutes (they had 40 minutes) I knew we were going to have a doozy of a day. There were farewells, good lucks and Easter chocolate frivolity. You cant complain, especially if you win some chocolate and you are on Yard duty......MMMMMM.
Might not be updating everyday as I will be enjoying the time off.

Interviews
Update on the desk - I have found part of it. It's like moving deckchairs on the titanic. I now have a few neat piles..... I might correct the books now while I wait for dinner in between parent teacher interviews.
There is something quite surreal about Parent teacher interviews. Parent sits down (with or without child) and we begin the process - what is good, what needs improvement and what I wont tolerate anymore. Parent nods their head, child looks sheepish, I feel better - all in the space of 5 minutes. Then we start again.
After 10 interviews I get bored of that set pattern and change it a little. I might ask the child what they think they are good at or what they might want to improve. I might ask a parent what they want to know - this is a last resort as they ask too many questions!
The only thing I worry about with parent teacher interviews is that I might lose my voice. It has happened 3 times before and I was absent for 2 days. Really annoying as a singer......
Right, enough of posting - back into the correcting......

coooorection
I've lost my desk!
I'm sitting here surrounded by books. Not nice books that you want to pick up and read but student books. In these glorious things are many spelling errors and 'interesting' compositions.
I used to be an amazing speller. My grammar was fab once too. Now I forget how many 'm's you need in tomorrow or find that I am struggling with nouns and pronouns, I have also discovered the joys of running all my thoughts together into one GIANT sentence so I can get to the end of what I am typing so much faster - it saves time! (a 12 year old told me that just last year when I complained about a paragraph over 20 lines long and just ONE sentence.)
There are many things I love about my job: crazy antics of the students and teachers, the delight when they "get" something. BUT I must confess that correction is something I avoid as much as possible, as is book work. I put it off and then make an amazing and painful dash at it. This often happens as the towers around me start to crumble and hit me on the head as I try and create something new for the kiddies.
I just got a note in my pigeon hole (sounds very strange) that my student teacher starts at the beginning of next term. I must make sure the correction is done, my desk is clear and that I am the best example of all teachers.
Maybe tomorrow when it's meant to be cooler!

extra
I find taking extras an interesting situation. I am sitting in a year 8 class right now. I don’t know any of them by name only by sight. It is an Art Class and there has been no real work left for them to do. I have them in the second period of a double. They are a little restless and I am quite grateful that they are taking the time to converse about what happened over the weekend. The only thing that I have put my foot down about is the aimless wandering of a few girls…. well it isn’t aimless. They have a mission – to spread gossip. Had to stop that. I went to an all girls’ school and I know how bitchy girls can get left to their own devices.
Actually I should quote what the sheet said. “Continue on from Period 1”. Usually ok but they had nothing to do during period 1 so I have come in to some mischief making. This will entertain me. I just roamed the room and the kids are very silly! Could be the hot weather, could be boredom. It is really hard to work out totally; there is no one answer. Then the pack mentality sets in and they nudge one another along down the road of silliness. My role in all of this is to just dampen the fun occasionally.
One boy has been demonstrating ‘magic’ tricks. He can make his ruler fall over without touching it. He is judging the speed of wind moving from the fans above. (Didn’t mean to break the magicians code of silence.) His mates are laughing and he is pretending that he believes in what he is doing.
I started my teaching career taking extras. I was employed as an emergency teacher. I would get a phone call at 7.30 in the morning and was asked “can you work today?”. If no, I would stumble back to bed, yes meant quickly getting dressed and eating and being out the door within 20 minutes. You never knew what you were going to get. Generally I got 6 periods on (the maximum number of classes in a day) and a yard duty.
My first class as a fresh faced graduate music teacher was a science class with year 9s. I had the delight of introducing the human reproductive system! Yay me! I looked over the material as I wandered into the room, took the roll (marking where they all sat – Thanks to mum for that hint!) and then we began. I introduced the topic, handed out the material and a boy raised his hand. When I acknowledged him he asked if there was a practical component to the class and would I be taking it. I took a deep breath and said no to both and that we should move on with the work set. Unfortunately the tone had been set and questions were being thrown around the room willy nilly.

news and weather
I don’t watch the news on television. If I do, I watch the World news on the International station (SBS). I find commercial stations hype up the news. Often I am astounded by what they consider to be important enough to be the lead story. This week one station led with an ‘exclusive’ about one of their celebrities facing a battle with cancer. I realise that this is probably huge news in this mans life, but compared with the political situation in Pakistan or somewhere else, I am not really concerned. Please don’t misunderstand me, I appreciate what it takes to battle through cancer (recently seen it with a few close to me) but I don’t need to know how some ex-footballer who is a sexist bastard is dealing with it. In my opinion he doesn’t respect other people so I have NO respect for him. (The only positive that I can see is if it raises the status of prostate cancer and getting checks.)
The next day one of the local papers led with the same article. As the paper is a tabloid, the photo and headline covered the whole of the front page. The other major newspaper (a broadsheet) had a story about corruption as its lead that only covered the top half of the front page.
I don’t actually read the newspaper either. I flick the pages each day, check out the headlines and look at the pictures. Sometimes the wording of a headline or the link made to a photo astounds me. It is not until I get to the entertainment section (predominantly reviews) that I slow down the flicking and start reading. I can’t be bothered with the ‘news’ about celebrities, as I don’t really see them as celebrities. (That’s a whole other story about the rise of celebrity status when people should just be recognised as being good at their job – acting, sport, music etc – not how they live their life!)
It astounds me when people decide to read the paper from the back. What is the fascination with sport? People are good at running or throwing or something quite physical, and suddenly they have developed a God-like status. (Again think of the rise of celebrity status. We look at how they have lived their lives and if they make a mistake we tear them apart. Often these ‘celebrities’ start their lives in the spotlight at the age of 16 or so. I don’t know many 16 year olds who don’t make mistakes. I teach them. They’re not heroes, they’re just kids who happen to be good at something and suddenly they are expected to lead the way. They struggle with doing what they can and we (as a society) want so much more from them. How unfair is that?)
To avoid all these confusing issues of false stardom and the like, I listen to the radio for my news. Not commercial radio – that’s where you get opinion, which can be good for a laugh. I listen to the national broadcaster each morning. There are no commercials, lots of in-depth questions and the occasional laugh. By the time I get to work in the morning, I know all the news I need to.
I also love commercial free radio for music. I love the public broadcasters (PBS and RRR) as they play music I might never have heard before and probably wont ever again. They also talk through issues that might not be discussed elsewhere. Today, being Sunday, I will sit and listen to RRR where I will hear ‘Radio Marinara’ – a show dedicated to the world of the sea including rivers and coasts then a show dedicated to medicine and research. After that I will flick to PBS and listen to very early Blues and roots, ska, rockabilly and anything that has become popular over the last 50 years.
I think my life is fairly balanced. I know what is current news wise and I also know what is current in the popular culture, but I love the fact that I am actively avoiding paid and unpaid advertising. As I discovered at dinner last night, I am part of a minority but I love being there. It is great to know that I don’t have to believe all that is presented to me, be willing to question, and to look for alternatives.

Who do you think you are?
I think I am a hummingbird.
I base this on the talk we had Friday 7th March from Selina Byrne. I have been monitoring my sleep patterns and my preferred way of being. She stated that there are 3 types of people. Larks – who love the morning and are bright and chirpy through the early hours but fall in a heap about 9 or 10 at night. Night owls – love the night and find the early hours of the morning difficult to deal with. Often they are snarly people in the early hours but are just hitting their happiest at 11pm.
As I stated I think I am a hummingbird as I would prefer a sleep in but am ok with getting up early most mornings (as long as I get a sleep in somewhere in the week), and I can get into the groove at night time as well. I don’t like staying up too late on a work night as it makes the next day a little hard to deal with but I just hum along with whatever I have to. (Sometimes I can be a little snaky though and I don’t remember that being an option.)
I also have come to realise that I have a work groove and a holiday groove when it comes to sleep patterns. Work groove is something along the lines of bed by 10pm and awake at 6am following day. Holiday groove can become 1am or beyond for going to bed and anything after 8am to get up. The first week back at work after a few weeks of this is a killer getting back into a work groove but after that I am fine.
It’s in the first week back at work that I can have some of the more inane discussions with students, fellow teachers, parents and my own friends and family. These discussions often lead to peculiar glances at me to make sure that I am ok – which I generally am but often have stated something that is physically or intellectually impossible. Reactions are great. I feed of them.
What I do find interesting – besides my own state of being, are those around me. I believe I work with obvious larks, night owls and humming birds BUT I do think there are many categories that haven’t been considered. Vultures – who pick up anything they can from the carnage around them; Lions – who really love the sound of their own roar but often are pussy cats underneath; Hyenas – who laugh manically at the issues others face; Sloths – who will do anything to avoid work but often try to take the credit for the work of others; Bower birds – who collect anything and everything around them (have you seen their desks); and Magpies – who steal from others quite easily but are extremely territorial.
I know some of the categories are not birds but they are animals. I have only really looked at the negative, as it seems that they are jumping out at me the whole time. There are those who could be like Beavers – constantly working for the greater good and Elephants – who work together as a herd to help all around them, but I find that it is hard to find animals to make positive analogies with.
So how would you describe your workplace?

it's too darn hot!
It is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO hot at the moment. I live in Melbourne and it's meant to be Autumn (Fall) and we still have temperatures over 35o C (95 F). Last night it got down to about 25C (77F) I slept well but many of my students didn't and they are tired, grumpy and just cant be bothered with anything that I have set.
Yesterday was 38C (100.4) and then today is 40C (104). In Adelaide they have had 16 days straight with this kind of weather which is apparently a record. In Melbourne we have just had a record for a 40C in March.
I am over the hot weather. We have had it since October last year - that's 6 months. I don't mind the hot weather but we have stage 3a water restrictions (35% left in the dams) so I feel guilty when I do anything related to water. The other thing is that my house has two WEST facing full-wall length windows so my house gets very hot. It's hot in and out of the house. i keep the back door open and the neighbours sit on their patio and talk in really loud 'ocker' (slang for Australian) voices. It frustrates me!
Ok - so I have had a whinge and a grumble. Maybe I am affected by the heat. Good thing I don't live in the north of Australia, I would never shut up with my whining.

wednesday
Wednesday.
Hump day.
Day of reflection. Day of anticipation.
Reflecting on what I have achieved and anticipating what is in store for me in the next few days, especially the weekend.
I have come to realise that I love and loath Wednesday. There is something about getting to the end of the day and knowing that you have only 2 more sleeps until the weekend. The loathing is only around at the beginning of the day when you realise that you have to get through the day before you have those two sleeps.
Lucky I teach pretty cool kids on a Wednesday.

GRRRRR!
Why is it that some people just don't have a clue?
I work with people who just don't know how to read body language, facial expressions and tone of voice. How did these people become teachers?
It always amazes me that people can't or won't read someones situation - such as sitting and working at your desk in a crowded staffroom - and decide that that is the best time to have a conversation.
I love to talk BUT I hate taking work home with me. I don't get paid enough to cover the home hours with correction and preparation etc. My 'free' time at work is quite precious to me. I like to do the preparation and correction there so inane conversations 'SHIT ME TO TEARS!' (Great song by The Tennants from the 1990s)
Don't misunderstand me - sitting in the social staffroom is great for talking about footy (what I contribute is rather amusing!), films, music (my forte - ha ha!) and the like BUT when I am at my desk that is it! My desk is my fortress and that is where I work. The moat that is built around me is full of snarling crocodiles that snap and bite as they feel like it. It is amazing how they have an uncanny resemblance to ME!
I think I have made myself clear. If only the guy who sits next to me got it!

LONG weekend
I love a long weekend - you get a day for 'free' which is wonderful. I have noticed that many of the blogs I read who come from Victoria are loving the long weekend too.
Today I went for a drive with some people I haven't seen in ages. It was a warm day and great to sit in an air conditioned car driven by someone else.
We drove to Warburton then up to the Upper Yarra Reservoir to check out the state of the dams and see if there is enough water - there is lots but obvious that the level is down. Lunch was at the Reefton pub (pretty average foodwise but ok) then off to Mount Donna Buang. From there we went back down the mountain to Warburton which was where I got into a little bit of trouble.
We dropped into a bric a brac place and there was lots of stuff everywhere - some particularly weird stuff. I picked up a photo album from a pile of books that were for sale and saw HEAPS of photos of a wedding inside. I said quite loudly to those with me that I thought that it was odd that someone would give away photo album with all the photos. I also thought that there might have been some bad blood from a marriage breakup and the owner just got rid of the photos as quickly as possible.
At this point the lady in the shop tapped me on the arm, I turned and noticed tears in her eyes (oh shit!) and she said "those are pictures of my son and daughter in law at their wedding last year and he died 6 weeks afterwards!"
Awkward moment.
I put the photo album down, friends have all GONE! They almost ran out and left me there to face the music......
I apologised for my comments.
She said it was ok and that maybe it was a silly thing to have brought in the photo album as ti reminds her too much of the sadness in the lives of her son and daughter in law. (you think?)
I made the appropriate noises which encouraged a little more discussion. (hmmm)
Not only did the son die 6 weeks after the wedding, the daughter in law has just had both breasts removed and had a hysterectomy due to her battle with cancer and there are little children to be looked after. The lady is only working until Easter (shop will be sold) then hightailing it to Western Australia to help out any way she can. To top it all off today is her sons birthday! (that was why the photo album was there!)
AARGH!
I quietly climbed into my shell, changed which foot I had in my mouth, wished her all the best and left the shop.
The rest of the day was an anticlimax really. I am still recovering!

the LIGHT BULB moment
It's a long weekend this weekend in Melbourne and I am very excited. I woke up this morning and thought "WOW! I have another sleep in tomorrow morning!" Considering the week I have had this couldn't come at a better time.
For the last 4 weeks I have had a headache everyday. Some days a mild well-mannered headache and other days they have been ridiculous - bordering on migraine territory. As a migraine suffer I analyse the ache of the head carefully. Most of the time I know what to do but this time I was starting to get worried as I was ensuring that I was getting enough sleep, good nutrition etc. but then to counteract that I was craving sugars and biscuits and I was waking between 3 and 5am lots.
Eureka! On Friday at work we had a guest speaker in (on our student free day) and she talked about exhaustion, diet, Adrenalin etc and how it affects the teaching profession ALOT!
After feeling guilty about having to pull out of a couple of camps I was meant to be going on, I suddenly felt almost liberated. I felt justified that what I had been experiencing wasn't just a figment of my imagination and did not show that I was unprofessional. These were both weighing heavily on my mind as I felt that I was losing touch and couldn't do it all. For many people this sounds strange but for me, and many teachers I have discovered, it is not unusual to have feelings of doubt.
I have started working on the suggestions for improving my lifestyle. I am endeavouring to only drink one cup of coffee per day, have a small amount of protein at each meal, cut down the amount of carbohydrates that I eat during the day and looking for the healthy work/life balance. The biggest thing that I have to work on (and I think it will take some time) is learning to say "no" and mean it.
Also I discovered during this week is that running is not the thing for my health and well being.
Throws my hips out of alignment which then plays havoc with my spine which then sends interesting messages to the brain which replies with a dull ache or two. Combine this with the stress I felt under at work and you have a great recipe for bad sickness......thank you to the people who organised the speaker and allowed me to have a few LIGHT BULB moments.

What is netball?
Vanessa left a comment saying she didn't know what netball was so here are a few things to look at. Just keep in mind that netball is one of the most popular competitive sports in Australia and New Zealand. the rivalry between these two countries is HUGE and there is ebb and flow between who is the number 1 team etc.
First the rules - it is like basketball except for the running with the ball and the scoring - so nothing like it really. Better explanation here.
Hope that explains a few things but you might want to see it so go to this site on you tube to see an amazing game that I went to last year. The thing about international games is that Australian and New Zealand umpires are often not used and the umpiring has a few issues. This game showed it dramatically - the umpires lost complete control of the game by the end and it was awful to watch.
The other thing about netball is that there are many injuries related to knees and ankles. rough on the joints as you have to stop so much......

meme
I have been tagged by Mr Abode for a meme. This comes in two parts and both have made me think - as if I have hadn't had enough of that this last week!
5 Random/Weird things about myself
1. I am closer in age to my eldest niece than I am her mother - 10 years:14 years.
2. I have lived in 14 houses/units in 10 years. (something about those numbers which is just weird within itself)
3. I have a scar on the side of my face which I got from a dog bite when I was in grade 4.
4. I have a split uvula (you know, the thing that hangs down at the top of your throat at the back of your mouth.)
5. I have named nearly all my cars (Myrtle the Mazda, Horatio the Datsun, Querida the Holden and now the Astra - which I haven't named.
5 places I want to see or see again
1. Having read Mr Abodes thoughts I agree with this: West coast of the US - especially San Francisco and the Yosemite National Park. Alaska, Washington state, Canada. Also Chicago, Grand Canyon, Baltimore and New York.
2. I also agree with Bay of Islands in NZ (again though). I would love to see the Milford Sound in NZ though - from one end of the islands to another.
3. Ireland - never been there but gees I think it would be amazing.
4. South America - it would be fascinating and exciting.
5. Closer to home I would love to see Western Australia especially during the flower season. It would be beautiful.
I tag Nancy, Laura and Vanessa

mainly about netball possums!
I am a champion!
My netball team won the premiership last night! We lost last week so we had to play to get into the final which was at 6.45pm. If we won that play off then we played in the grand final at 8.30!
The place we play at is extremely strange - most of the players are recycled from one game to another. Everyone seems to know who is on our team as we only play for the one team.
Most of us seemed to have decided that we didn't really want to play another season with this group - all reason quite different from each other but it all comes down to the organisation of the place.
Here are some of the reasons why we wanted to stop playing there. 1) We have to pay $10 per game (which is only 30 minutes!) even the finals. Most places you play for standard games but not for the finals. At this price you would expect to have decent umpiring. 2) Lack of umpires - most netball is 2 per game but we only ever got 1 and they were shocking at that! Often they would lose control of the game or were influenced by the players who acted/reacted the best 3) Extremely rough play. Netball is a non contact sport but here it is quite different. If the umpires had more control then maybe we wouldn't have so many injuries. 4) playing the same players week after week - where is the rotation? Often the team would change but the players would be the same - in different coloured t shirts!
So I couldn't really stand it any more! I decided that I was over it all. I was sick (and still am) of turning up and not playing at the time when I thought I was but sometimes 10 - 15 minutes later. for a 30 minute game I was sometimes out for 2 1/2 hours! Okay for a 7 pm start but if the game is at 9.30 and you don't get home until 11pm it makes it long and tiresome. You often are revved up and don't sleep for a while.
Now my complaints are out of the way I will give a quick summary of the games. We were playing for a spot in the final. The other defender (who I travel with) and I had decided that we didn't really want to win as we couldn't be bothered hanging around for so long. We tried to not play to our best but we ended up winning by about 6 goals!
So we sat in the bar and talked as a team about crap things. It was quite funny really. We filled up on soft drink and greasy food - great for energy we told ourselves. Then we headed out to play.
The same defender and I had decided (individually) that seeing we got to the grand final we were going to win! We started of badly, there was a serious amount of angst amongst the players at the other end of the court. The umpire told everyone to settle down or she would throw the relevant players off the court (later discovered that they were both the captains). We were down at half time. We worked hard. We defended well - as did they. But we triumphed by one goal. Woo hoo!
I might just add that I was playing against a tree! She was tall and she was wide. I am tall (175 cm, 5'9'') and I only came up to her shoulder! But she was nice and there was little or no animosity between us.
So now I have another trophy for the shelf - bloody ugly thing!
I got home to discover that I had a visitor hanging (literally) on the back door. The cat was intrigued! She sat looking up and watching the possum that had decided that my back door looked like a tree. It was very exciting for all of us.

I got home to discover that I had a visitor hanging (literally) on the back door. The cat was intrigued! She sat looking up and watching the possum that had decided that my back door looked like a tree. It was very exciting for all of us.

handy dandy men
I have a plethora of handy men at the moment.
One of the virtues of renting is that you can off load your 'issues' repair wise to them. I rang the office over 2 months ago when I wanted to have the fly wire replaced and then again I asked for the light in the kitchen to be replaced.
Dont get me wrong - I can change a light globe but this one in the kitchen is an old 1970s model and I tried!
Anyway for the past few weeks I have been cooking by lamplight - very romantic but not conducive for safety in the kitchen. (or hygiene by that token)
Last night the electrician rang and organised to come in and help me out at ten to 7 this morning. I was very happy about this.
Then it got very exciting. The handy man rang and said he was coming over today to change the fly wire! I told him it was the time for handy men.
Lovely man. He listened to my story. He laughed at the right moments. Then he told me I might need to get out more if that was exciting for me.
Yes - I think he is right.

Monday, Monday
You know Monday always comes around too fast. I made this comment to one of the guys I work with and he suggested that you think the weekend is longer if you do something on a Friday night. I have to agree with him - but the weekend is still too short!
This weekend I was out each evening and through the day as well but I still felt 'ripped off' in terms of time.

I think part of this stems from the fact that I went to a concert yesterday evening where the main instrument was the veena (see above). I enjoyed the playing alot but found the amount of time for the concert was toooooooooo long. (have I made that clear?) The concert was a graduation for a girl who has been playing this instrument for 9 years - but she is only 14 years of age! She played for about 2 1/2 hours without music and with an orchestra accompanying her!
The good thing about this concert was the fact that they had a few guest speakers, telling us about the virtues of the veena and how to play in a truly classical Indian style, so I was able to count it as part of my Professional Development! Yay!

finalising the thoughts for the week
I found out why the bloke takes his dog paragliding. According to the news reports the man is battling cancer and his dog goes everywhere with him. That solved that issue.
If only all other issues were solved so easily. Essentially I think they are but then someone has to ask that question "Why?" and we think we have to answer the question. We shouldn't be encouraging this sort of behaviour from young uns. I also think "Why" should be taken out of the lexicon, this has served many a political regime well.
I will try today not to ask the question nor will I try to answer it.
I thank people for their contribution to Mush Brain Fridays. I have come to the conclusion that I am not the only one who suffers from it - most don't seem to admit it though. A shame really. I think if we went to work and didn't do our job completely we could just state that we are suffering from mush brain Friday. In fact I think there should be a psychological study into it and then it should be recognised for what it is - a legitimate condition and not a figment of my imagination. Then I could claim expenses from health care organisations. Maybe I'm thinking about this too much.
Last night I had people over for dinner. Well actually I cooked dinner and took it to their house to enjoy. (I can hear you wanting to ask the question that has been banned for today!) This is due to the fact that they have a little tyke who needs to go to bed earlyish and then female friend is allergic to my cat. Easiest solution (as they live round the corner from me) I cook, take over there and then they do the dishes in their house.
Anyway we had roast chicken which was huge! I mean this bird was the size of a small turkey. Probably was and it thought that it might get away with living if it went incognito. (question is burning again!) Unfortunately that didn't happen and we all enjoyed a very tender chook.
Preemptive text is a hassle though. I sent a message to female friend asking them if they wanted to share a roast chicken and she rang me laughing hysterically as I had asked them if they wanted to share a "smart" chook. Well it wasn't smart chook as it would still be alive doing the chook thing.

anonymity
Anonymity (or as much as I have given myself on this site) has many opportunities and some restrictions.
The opportunities mean that I can talk about what is going on in my world to a freer level without worrying about the majority of people knowing who I am talking about etc. I have the ability to talk through issues that affect me - most of them I am trying to see the humouress side of.
Restrictions - well. Through my advertising to friends and family I feel that I can't talk about everything that I am thinking of or trying to work through.
This came to light today when I was sent a link by someone I know, to read and I was amazed. There is so much passion in this writing and there is so much desire to work through what is below the surface. While I do not have such issues in my life I respect the desire for the space to work through their issues.
I would love you to read what is there and comment if you want to but PLEASE if you work out who this person is do not leave a name.........there is a desire to remain totally anonymous.
I thank this person for allowing me the opportunity to learn a little more about their life.
